Why is it good news? Because a lot of people don’t need huge cars like the Yaris or land yachts like the Corolla. The average couple has only 1.4 kids, so why have room for five passengers when you only need four?

They don’t need big-displacement engines, either, like the 1.5-litre and 1.8-litre units that are found in the aforementioned Toyotas. Imagine, you can get a big-block 2.4-litre engine in the Corolla XRS; talk about waste of natural resources.

Okay, we’re exaggerating a little. But you get the idea (we hope).

The Scion iQ is basically a cockpit with an outer body that’s tightly wrapped around it. Think of any Marvel super hero that has a skin-tight costume, and there you have it.

The iQ has a wheelbase of 2,000 mm and an overall length of 2,985 mm, so it’s longer than a smart fortwo. But it’s dwarfed by a 3-door Yaris Hatchback. Yet inside, there are 50/50-split folding rear seats, so it’s more practical than the smart.

We’re not sure two adults will fit comfortably in back, though, but we did search extensively through European Toyota iQ discussion forums, and it seems as though 7 year-old children or infants in child seats will fit in back with 6-foot-tall adults in front, but sitting two full-grown adults in tandem is a real challenge. Scion calls the iQ a “3+1”, which probably means the person riding in the rear will take up most of the available space.

As for cargo space, you get 32 litres with the rear seatback is up, and 238 litres when it’s folded down. Grocery shopping with the whole family on board is out of the question.

But when you drive to work in the morning, you’re probably riding solo, so all that space is irrelevant anyway. We told you a Yaris was too big.

As part of the North American debut of the all-new 2011 Scion iQ premium micro-subcompact car, Five Axis has created a special iQ show car for display at the 2010 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS). Five Axis’ iQ show car demonstrates the personal customization synonymous with all Scions.

Elegance and sophistication were the primary influences for the iQ show car. This is evident with its unique exterior color called Titanium, consisting of pearl bismuth silver that is accented with black chrome.

Inside, the special iQ show car is appointed with custom leather-trimmed seats and door inserts and an Ultrasuede® EcoDesign™ headliner. Unique upholstery is provided by Little John’s Interior Concepts and custom floor mats were provided by Chilewich.

Performance was enhanced with the installation of a TRD Custom Big Brake Kit and a Tein suspension. The iQ show car rides on 18-inch Yokohama S.drive tires mounted onto five AD S6:F wheels.

Aston Martin officially unveiled the Cygnet Concept at the Geneva Motor Show. You should all be familar with the story by now. The Cygnet is actually a Toyota iQ minicar that has been heavily modified by Aston Martin.

“Many of our customers have a need for a small car for urban and city use,” said Aston Martin Chief Executive, Dr Ulrich Bez. “The Cygnet Concept brings intelligence, innovation and artistry to the small car market. The Cygnet Concept represents the natural choice for those customers looking for a premium commuter car. Our past, our future and our backbone will always remain sports cars, but the Cygnet Concept will support this by offering our customers a greater degree of freedom in the urban context.”

The Cygnet is expected to enter production at the end of this year or early next year.

Aston Martin today released first official images of the ‘Cygnet’ – a new luxury commuter concept car based on the Toyota iQ.

According to Aston Martin, the Cygnet concept represents a creative, environmentally conscious solution, being small, yet with presence – and highly fuel efficient, now combined with the prestige of Aston Martin’s luxury brand ownership.

The Cygnet won’t be cheap compared to the Toyota iQ it is based on, rumored price is around £26,000 ($30,000), which is still cheap compared to true Aston Martin models.Power will come from the same 1.0-liter or 1.3-liter engine found in the Toyota iQ. No V8 and V12 engines for this little Aston Martin.

A most unlikely collaboration, the Cygnet concept promises to deliver the prestige of Aston Martin’s luxury brand ownership in a small, highly fuel efficient package.

The Cygnet first appeared in June as a full-size clay model and sparked mass controversy over the logic behind the decision to adapt the city vehicle to fit under the Aston Martin umbrella of performance cars.

Aston Martin Chief Executive, Dr Ulrich Bez, likens the Cygnet to an exclusive tender for a luxury yacht – a valid comparison considering most Aston Martin’s are usually tucked away in a garage.

The concept adopts many Aston Martin trademark design features both inside and out, including the signature grille and tail lamps, flush door handles, bonnet and side vents and instrument cluster.

Aston Martin plans to turn the Cygnet Concept into a production vehicle for customers in the UK and Europe from 2010.
